Belstaffs Riding Jersey is a motorcycle jacket like no other.
We are huge fans, and have sold many thousands in recent years, but its not for everyone so were going to explain what it is, and what it is not.
In fact, Belstaff described the Riding Jersey as a cotton fleece with a Polyurethane coating.
And, of course, technically that is what it is. The coating gives a slightly rubberised feel to the outer material.
The inside is lined with a cotton jersey fabric.
The appearance of the jacket is somewhere between a traditional soft-shell jacket and a leather jacket.
The look is quite appealing, with a soft, vintage feel, not dissimilar to a worn leather.
In terms of styling, of course, the Riding Jersey looks very much like a traditional biking jacket.
Theres Belstaffs trademark collar fastening, extra padding on the shoulders and elbows, two flap-pockets, and two zip pockets.
So that you can ride in it, the jacket comes with intelligent D3O CE protectors in the elbows and shoulders.
But it would be incorrect to view the Riding Jersey as a proper, fully-functional, all-year-round riding jacket. It is not.
It is a coated fleece with armour.
The appearance is very cool, and you could wear the jacket all day, every day. Its very smart, and extremely comfortable.
It comes with protectors, as we have said, but the jacket offers very little by the way of protection from the wind and the rain, so its scope is quite limited.
Wear it for short trips around town in the summer. But not when its cold or wet.
There is another issue to which we have to draw your attention.
The PU coating is very stretchy and, over time, cracks can be discerned in the outer material.
This is the nature of the fabric, and is totally normal.
Some people do not like this and, as a result, some customers have complained.
But we have to point out that this is a feature of the jacket. Over time, leather cracks. So does this material.
But, in fact, some jackets display this cracking right out of the box. With others, the cracking takes longer to appear. But eventually it will happen.
If you are going to buy the Riding Jersey, you need to accept that this is the way it will age.
Despite the cracking, the jacket will still give you many years of service.
Its a great jacket that bridges the gap between casual wear and protective wear like nothing else.
We love it, and highly recommend it. In the summer, the Riding Jersey is our favourite go-to piece of riding apparel.
