The Typhoon is the kind of riding pant one might expect from Belstaff. It is a very smart looking, very cool and very stylish pant. But in some ways it feels more like a fashion trouser that has been adapted for the bike rather than one that started out purely with motorcycling in mind. But to be fair, one could say the same about almost everything that comes out of the brand. And indeed, that’s kind of why Belstaff is so popular. Many people have tried to emulate the British brand, but still nobody combines cool looks with motorcycling more convincingly.
 
The Typhoon has a reasonably relaxed fit. Not relaxed in the way that motorcycle cargo pants used to be; rather they’re relaxed in comparison with, say, a Rokker jean. You get two jean-style hand pockets, two cargo pockets on the thighs with rubber covered poppers, and one rear pocket. Walk into a coffee shop or a restaurant wearing a pair of Typhoons, and nobody would know that you’re wearing a protective, motorcycle pant.

Talking of protection, the Typhoons are rated single A under EN17092. That should not be a surprise to anybody really. Are there more protective pants on the market? Yes, of course there are, but that’s not what the Typhoons are about. This is unashamedly an urban pant, a pant you would be happy wearing on the bike if you’re pootling about, but they wouldn’t be my first choice for tazzing down the motorway. In terms of armour, the pants come with barely detectable, Level 1 Ghost protectors in the knees and the hips. Again, this is what you would want and expect in such a trouser, although you could upgrade to Level 2 Ghost if you wanted. (On an exchange basis, the cost would be just £25).

If there’s a downside to the Typhoon, it is that it comes in one leg length only. And at this kind of price point one would expect more. The Rokker Legend jean, for example, is the same price, and comes in four leg lengths. Out of interest, in a 32” waist Typhoon pant the leg length is just 31”. Now when you consider that, on the bike, you will often need an extra 2” in the leg, one might conclude that the Typhoons are already quite short in the leg. Certainly, we would expect that anybody approaching six foot will find these pants too short on the bike.
