Product InformationThere's nothing, we have to admit, particularly special about the roll-neck jumper that McQueen wore in the film Bullitt. That having been said, I tried to find one for myself for many years and couldn't. I saw and tried on dozens but never managed to find one in the right colour in the correct fabric.
Which is why I decided to go to a UK based woollen mill and have one made up to the original specification. There are two key criteria: the weight of the wool and the colour. Many people imagine the jumper that Steve wore in the film was lightweight, but it wasn't. Frank Bullitt was based in San Francisco where it can be cold in the summer when the clouds roll in over the bay. And in the winter, it can be bloody freezing. Which is why the Solar Productions wardrobe people probably put the Frank Bullitt character into a heavyish weight of jumper.
Of course, we don't know the composition of Franks jumper or exactly the weight of the wool, but I visited a chap who buys and sells yarn all over the world and who also supplies some of the worlds most prestigious clothing companies. I showed him photos and we watched the film together on Blu-ray.
Without being too boring about it, we came up with a medium weight Merino wool as the best option. After some research he found a mill that produced the weight we wanted in the perfect shade of French Navy. After some deliberating we decided, as we did with our shawl neck cardigan, to infuse the wool with a percentage of Acrylic. This doesn't change the texture or hand-feel, but it does add to the recoverability (stretch) of the material and it does make it easier to look after; that is to wash it and so on.
The bottom line is that we think we have created the perfect Bullitt replica jumper. It would be the ideal accompaniment to our own Bullitt jacket but, equally, its a great but simple roll-neck in its own right. And its at a terrific price because there's no middle man; well other than us!
