Rukka Down X jacket in black Product Information
As an alternative to a thermo suit, Rukka are now offering the duck-down filled 'Down X' suit for the winter months. It can be worn underneath a motorcycle suit.
No longer just an accessory for the Nivala, the Down X jacket and pants are filled with 90% duck down and 10% feathers stowed in small, supplied pouches that weigh in at just 300 grams, and can be stowed to save space thanks to their small dimensions. Read our editorial about how to stay warm on a motorcycle.
Specification
- A separate extra warm down jacket with 100g filling (90/10 down/feather).

Derek Lockhart: Mr
I spent a long time thinking before i purchased the Rukka out fit. Shortly after purchasing it I traveled in torental for 350 miles. While my fellow bikers were in various stages ranging from a little wet to absolutely soaked and cold .me I was dry and toasty. That was the point I new the rukka kit was worth every penny.
Denis Vauclair: Mr
So impressed with the Rukka down X. It is really the warmest layer ever, although it is very light and thin. Thoroughly recommended
Rich Fell: Rukka Down X
Really light weight, packs down to nothing and super warm. 5hrs riding with only this, a thin base layer and T-shirt under textiles - temperatures dropping to 1 degree and still comfortably warm. Have bought the trousers as well, not cheap but worth every penny and more!
RICHARD HILL: Mr
I bought this for use in a Rukka Navigatorr jacket as an upgrade to replace the supplied lining. The Down-X makes it much easier to use the Navigatorr, especially not having to bother with removal and fiddly refit of the lining. It eliminates draughts, puffing out slightly to fill the gaps, as well as effectively sealing the neck and lends a real overall comfort to the jacket. If there’s a downside, then it’s once the temperature is in the mid-teens, the Down X feels too warm: I reckon the Down-X will take me right through the winter with just a shirt underneath. The Down-X itself looks good quality and could pass for something to wear when you’re at your destination. The outer material feels windproof as well. The watch-out is that it is down, so not an outer layer if at all damp, this does however make for a thin jacket that’s warm for its weight and packs down well into the supplied stuff-sack. To ensure it fits inside a bike jacket without fouling the connecting zips, it is shorter on the torso than a regular outdoors insulated jacket. The Down-X has zips on the outside of the upper arm which can be opened to fold the arms back inside themselves and into the jacket where they may be stowed into long internal pockets to make a gilet. Not sure if that’s really necessary for me, but could end up a nice touch if that’s your thing. Overall, a Like and happy with the purchase. Also, dare I say, not too severe on the price (well, for Rukka anyway!).
Colin: Toasty
Been wearing these in windchill of -3c with just a long sleeved T shirt, no problems whatsoever. Also when camping in winter they make a nice pair of pyjamas!
Paul: Rukka down x
The best £180 I have spent on bike gear, apart from heated grips.Been going out in winter with just a base layer and have been toasty warm. Under a Rukka or even Belstaff outer . Personally Id think the trousers are overkill for most of England, unless you're really intent on seeking out worst of conditions.
Dr Alan: Down-X jacket -Tell them it has pockets!
Ive been using Rab down jackets for this purpose but they are too long for most bike jackets - and you dont want to get them wet. This Rukka jobbie is short and ideal for biking. My only concern was whether it had pockets - I couldnt ascertain this even on the Rukka website.. but the good news is that it does!
james: Down X
I am truly amazed with this layer, I ride in the Scottish Highlands all year. My base layer is a Merino long sleeved top, mid layer is the Down X and I removed the thermal ling from my Rukka Armaxion to ride all day in around 6 degrees, result ! Warm as toast. No more bulk and light as a feather down jacket.
Paul: Superb bit of kit.
Warmest liner ever, and super lightweight. Best value of any Rukka item. Of course its not waterproof, though fine for off bike wear in dry weather .
