Motorcycle Helmets

A motorcycle helmet is the only item of protective wear that, by law, you have to wear when riding a motorcycle in the UK, and indeed in any European country. All helmets sold in the UK must be EC approved. The defining mark, an upper case E, is normally to be found on a label sewn on to the chin strap. Other countries have different approval systems, and whilst helmets from, say America, may be as protective as those we buy in Europe, their DOT and SNELL standards are not recognised in the EU, and their helmets cannot be sold or worn over here. The problem is that, if you were to wear a helmet like an American helmet like a Biltwell that should not be sold in the UK, you could find that your insurance company may not be willing to pay for your medical bills in a scenario where there are serious head injuries. Helmets, of course, come in a wide array of shapes and sizes; full face, open-face, off-road, adventure, urban, retro, flip, and  so on. A helmet should be replaced after any impact, and in all cases should be discarded within five years of the date of purchase.
