Belstaff Long Way Up Charley Boorman jacket in dark olive Product Information

For their most recent adventure, that the boys have titled The Long Way Up, Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman rode from the southernmost tip of South America all the way up to Los Angeles; a trip of some 13,000 miles. In a break with tradition, they elected to ride Harley Davidsons; but not just any old Harley Davidsons. This adventure saw them riding electric Harley Davidsons. But there was at least some continuity for the trip, as once again they chose to wear Belstaff clothing. Some 18 months before the trip, Belstaff came to see us at Motolegends to discuss a brand new, high-end technical suit for Charley, which resulted in the Belstaff Long Way Up suit you see here. By then, Ewan had already decided to take a more traditional route, preferring to undertake the adventure in a combination of wax cotton and leather. And you can read about those pieces elsewhere on the website. We did not, in any sense, design Charley’s suit, but Belstaff came to see us on a number of occasions to discuss what the competition had to offer, and to hear our views on what Was and wasn’t important in an adventure suit for a trip such as theirs. We showed them the best that brands like Klim, Rukka, Stadler and Halvarssons had to offer. In essence, we worked with them to cherry pick the best features from the very best outfits the motorcycle apparel world has to offer. The end result, which we first saw at Eicma in 2019, was impressive. We did suggest a few changes to those pre-production samples, and even though they could not all be incorporated into the suit that Charley wore, a number of them did make the cut for the retail offering. Now the best, most efficient, way to learn about Charley’s Belstaff Long Way Up suit is to watch our video review. In that review, we walk through the suit, and examine all the features in some detail. We love the suit and don’t hold back in our admiration for what Belstaff has achieved in such a short timeframe. But nor do we refrain from voicing our views about the bits that are not quite up to scratch. This is a great suit, but at this price only the very best is acceptable. Below we list all of the most important technical features but, as we’ve suggested, for a fuller picture watch our video review.

Meng: Belstaff long way up suit

So 2 years down waterproof people love it it looks great lots of pockets kidney belt zips it vents well I could wear during this summer heat wave. Yes it is is over priced but I can wear this for going out whilst the other better gear still makes me look like a biker love this

Meng: Belstaff Long way up jacket

Just bought the most expensive jacket ever. Love this I can wear this for dog walks mooching around without looking like some biker courier its a quality product lots of thoughts gone into this usual brilliant ML service only place to go

Marc: Beautiful

Let me start with the niggles to get them out of the way. The chap in the cap said they were looking into Napoleon pockets. There don't appear to be these on the final garment. The fast snap front flap pops aren't there either. The front pockets openings are a little on the small side. I worry about the longevity of the cuff zips. Right. That's out of the way. The ways this jacket shines more than overcome the niggles stated above. I owned a Belstaff waxed jacket about a decade ago and was not impressed but if this was good enough for Mr Boorman and Motolegends had input then maybe time for a consideration. I'm glad I took the jump. It looks the part straight out of the bag. Putting it on it feels substantial without the bulk and bloat of say an old Rukka Merlin jacket I had. There are some beautiful touches. I love the kidney belt stability. The rain cuffs on the inside of the arms. The myriad adjusters Im still finding. The camelback pocket. D3O armour. The material used. Look at the video if you want more details. Finally the real proof is in the pudding and several runs in filthy weather this week and I didn't notice. Just get one. It wont disappoint.
