Bering Antartica GTX pants in grey Product Information

The Antarctica pant comes with a Gore-Tex membrane, Level 1 armour in the knees and hips, an A rating under EN17092, and an EN17353 accreditation for visibility. The pant has a plentiful supply of pockets. Incoming and outgoing vents on the legs. A removable, thermal liner, and so on. You get a nice, elasticated waistband, and concertina banding above the knees for comfort.

All too often, these days, we find that the trousers that go with an adventure jacket are not wide enough to go over an adventure boot; sometimes they're barely wide enough to go over a touring boot, but that shouldn't be a problem with these pants. They are pretty wide in the lower leg, and can be cinched around the boot with Velcro strips to stop them flapping.

But there is, in our view, a problem with the Antartica pant, as indeed there is with every Bering pant. It comes in just one leg length which, in our experience, means that they will only work on about 50% of motorcyclists. Now, they do come with a facility to shorten the leg length, by folding the hem, and attaching it with Velcro to the inside of the leg. Frankly, it's a bit Heath Robinson; it just doesn't seem right; and what the fold-up system doesn't take into account is the fact that with a shorter leg length, the armour pocket should also be higher. Obviously you don't get this when you just shorten the hem. Which is why most technical brands offer three leg lengths.

This suit was first shown to us one evening here in the shop by the folk from Bering who had come over from France for a meeting with the distributor. And so we asked them why it was that Bering didn’t appear to take its trousers as seriously as its jackets.

“That’s simple”, was the retort, “in France everybody wears jeans”! It was a fair point; and of course it’s a trend we are seeing here in the UK too. When you get to your destination, you can take your 'heavy and cumbersome' motorcycle jacket off, but you can’t take your 'heavy and cumbersome' motorcycle pants off, and because motorcycle pants are not conducive to walking around in, people are increasingly matching a technical jacket with a pair of protective jeans.
