Rukka Voyage-R jacket in black Product Information

The Voyage-R jacket is a slightly down-spec.’d version of the Nivala jacket. It does not come with the Nivala’s down liner. And it does not contain the stretch that is woven into the jacket’s outer shell. But it is the removal of the Elastane in the fabric, along with stronger 1500 denier Cordura overlays on the shoulders and elbows, that has allowed Rukka to accredit the jacket at the AA level under EN 17092, as opposed to the Nivala’s single A rating.  That is to say that the jacket’s outer shell will be more abrasion resistant than that of the Nivala.

Whilst you lose the Nivala’s stretch on the Voyage-R, you do get concertina stretch panels behind the shoulders. You also get stretch panels inside the elbows.

Waterproofing comes courtesy of a 3-layer, laminated Gore-Tex membrane. Membranes don’t get better than this, so the Voyage-R will be totally waterproof as well as highly breathable. Of course, as it’s a Gore-Tex membrane it is guaranteed to be waterproof for life.

The Voyage-R comes with Rukka’s huge, L2, D3O armour throughout. That includes the back. You don’t get a chest protector. What you also don’t get with the Voyage-R, that you do with the Nivala, is a duck-down inner jacket.

In terms of venting, you get vents up the the flanks, you get shoulder vents, and vents in the back. What you don’t get are the chest vents that you do get with the Nivala.

The Voyage-R comes with two external pockets. There are volume adjusters on the biceps. You get adjusters too on the hem of the jacket. At the ends of the sleeves are zips and velcro flaps. There’s also a crotch strap if you can’t zip in to a pant. There’s also a zip that allows you to zip into a Rukka trouser.

Much of the other stuff is as you would expect with Rukka. So, a Neoprene collar. Gore-Tex cuffs. A Gore-Tex storm collar concealed in the neck, and so on.

And so, in essence, this is an AA-rated Nivala, without some of its creature comforts. Once the price of the Down-X inner jacket is factored in, the Voyage-R is just £200 cheaper than the Nivala. The other things you don’t get are vents on the chest and a chest protector.

The difference in price, we would suggest, is negligible, especially as we would always be prepared to buy back the Nivala’s down jacket. What it come down to, therefore, is the extra comfort of the Nivala or the extra abrasion resistance of the Voyage-R. It’s that simple.
