Tricker's Legend boot in coffee regatta Product Information

Whenever we work with Tricker's we'll end up basing our boot on a style that is already in the Tricker's archives. This time round, we have based our boot on a style that is known as the Charles. It is fashioned over their 4497 last, which means that it comes out true to a regular UK size. I would suggest that the fitting is slightly on the wider side.

Our Tricker's 'trademark' has become a gearchange pad that runs all the way across the toe.

Sometimes we have faux ankle protectors, but on this particular boot we have  an arrangement of padded baffles. In truth, I don't suppose they are going to add much by way of protection, although of course the CE certification doesn't mandate ankle protectors. But what this padding will do is make the boot more comfortable.

Much of the boot's construction is shared with other boots in the Tricker's range.

First thing to say is that the boot is no lightweight. If a motorcycle trainer is your favourite mode of footwear for the bike, you won't like these boots. Tricker's makes boots with gentleman farmer's and generational longevity in mind. With a modicum of care these boots will last a lifetime.

Certainly, there's no ankle boot in our range that feels as strong or robust. The nearest would be the Rokker Urban Racer, but even that feels a bit fey in such company.

Obviously, it's a Goodyear welted boot. In this case there's a brown, leather midsole. The rubber, Commando outsole is then sewn through the mid-sole and the welt. Between the mid-sole and the boot's upper is a sandwich of cork and a wooden shank. Your foot eventually moulds into the cork for comfort. The shank is there to add rigidity. The Goodyear welt construction makes the boot more waterproof, but it also means that any decent cobbler will be able to sew on a new sole whenever that becomes necessary.

Whenever we talk about a motorcycle boot, we will mention a counter in the toe and a counter in the heel. But the counters in this boot are from a different drawer. The toe box, in particular, feels as though you could drive a tractor over it, although we suggest you don't actually try this at home.

The sole, by the way, is 'unbeugsam' as they say in Germany. I have walked many, many miles in my various Tricker's boots, (I always get the samples made in 8.5), but you need to bear in mind that these are boots that will need some wearing in. They are not going to be comfortable from the off. They will get there, but they will never be your best choice for dancin'.

The style of the boot is known as a Derby; basically this means the quarters are sewn onto the vamp, thus creating an open, lacing system. Our boot has five eyelets, the top two of which are configured as speed hooks. And believe us when we say that this does make getting in and out of the boots so much easier.

Which brings us to the chassis of the boot.

The boot is made with a hydrophobic leather from the Heinen tannery in Germany. What this means is that the leather has been treated as part of the tanning process to be water resistant. Now the boot has no membrane, so it’s not technically a waterproof boot, but a combination of the Goodyear welt and the Heinen Regatta leather will mean that your feet are going to stay pretty dry in most circumstances. If you get wet feet in these boots on the bike, the most likely explanation will be rain bouncing off the road and over the shaft.

The boot is totally calf lined, and to help you get in and out of the  boot you get a sturdy, leather, pull strap on the heel.

First thing. These boots are not EN 13634 accredited as PPE footwear. It’s just not worth doing that for 50 pairs of boots. But the truth is that there can’t be many, if any, CE-approved, ankle boots out there that are tougher, more robust or more protective than these.

We know what’s out there. We see all the brands. We reckon we sell some of the best boots on the market, but there’s almost nothing that comes close to our Tricker's Legend boots. The only boot that's comparable is the Rokker Urban Racer. That's also an amazing boot, but even they aren’t as well made as these, which are put together here in Northampton by some of the best shoemakers in the world .

Clearly, these boots won’t be for everybody. For one thing they’re darned expensive, although they’re not as expensive as the boot it’s based on that you will find on Tricker’s own website.

We have made just 50 pairs of this new boot.  In the past, we have occasionally re-made one of our Tricker's boots, but in this instance we have decided not to because we already have our next boot on the drawing board.

All I can say is that 50 pairs is not a lot. Given that the boot comes in 11 sizes, the reality is that in some sizes we have just two pairs. Historically, some sizes do sell out very quickly.
