Rukka Air Vihti jacket in grey Product Information
The Rukka Air Vihti is another jacket that has been produced to challenge the Klim Marrakesh. That other jacket is a tad sportier, and sits a little shorter; it's called the Rukka Air Karvik.
Like the Air Karvik, the Air Vihti is constructed using a 500 denier Cordura infused with Elastane for stretch and comfort. Interestingly, even though both the Klim jacket and the Rukka jackets are AA rated for abrasion resistance the starting point for the Marrakesh is a much sturdier 1000 denier Cordura, which should perhaps only serve to remind us that not all AA garments are born equal.
As with the Air Karvik, the armour in the Air Vihti is superior to that found in the Klim Marrakesh. In the shoulders and the elbows you get D3O's, vented, Level 2, XTR armour. In the Marrakesh you get Level 1 Ghost which, whilst supremely comfortable, is not so impressive from a protection standpoint. And indeed it is with this consideration in mind that we offer an exchange scheme to upgrade to D3O Level 2 Diablo when you buy a new Marrakesh.
The downside of the Rukka armour, of course, is the impact it has on comfort. Level 2 Diablo armour is supremely comfortable. Level 2 XTR armour might to some be more reassuring, but it's not as light or flexible, and it is this that means that the Rukka just isn't in the same league as the Klim when it comes to wearability.
On the subject of armour, the Rukka jacket doesn't come with a back protector. Now, as we have said in the past, we are disappointed when Rukka omits such an important element of the protection equation from its jackets. We understand other brands doing this; especially the budget ones, but the way we see it every Rukka jacket should come with a back protector as standard. It's quite simple; if you want to talk the talk when it comes to protecting motorcyclists you need to walk the walk. And by 'cheaping-out', and not supplying a jacket like this with a back protector as standard, Rukka is letting itself down.
And given these feelings this we have no qualms about suggesting that you fit into the Air Vihti Rheon's highly breathable, Level 2 back protector rather than the Rukka one. It's lighter, more flexible, better vented and, in every way, nicer. It's also much less expensive.
One last thing; the Air Vihti is configured to take a two-part chest protector. The Marrakesh offers no such provision.
The Air Vihti sits a bit longer than the somewhat sportier Karvik. And so to make sure it doesn't flap about on the bike you get side adjusters to allow the waist to be cinched in.
Given its more overt, adventure styling, you get lots of pockets. Two pockets with flaps and zips below. Two zippered, chest pockets. A little card pocket on the left sleeve. A map pocket on the back that also doubles as a bladder compartment. There's another, top-loading zipper pocket inside the jacket.
All the other stuff is pretty standard fare for Rukka.
A high-rise, Neoprene-lined collar. Zips at the ends of the sleeves. Velcro tabs on the jacket's hem. A mesh lining. A crotch strap. YKK zips. A zip for connecting to a Rukka pant; or indeed a Halvarssons one. (Obviously you can also connect the jacket, therefore, to the Halvarssons' Waist Zip).
If you are looking for a high-airflow jacket to wear on a proper adventure, or if you want a jacket that is more overt in its adventure aesthetic, then the Air Vihti offers something that the Karvik does not.
But the Air Vihti offers something else that the Air Karvik doesn't; a more appealing colour palette.
Of course, like the Air Karvik, it comes in 'courier' black and 'impractical' white, but unlike the Air Karvik the Air Vihti also comes in a more appealing grey and black colourway. And the good news is that Rukka was able to achieve this without even having to fork out for any new colouring pens! You see, Rukka, when you put your mind to it you can achieve great things!
One more thing; there is a matching Air Vihti pant that's also the official, matching lower half to go with the Air Karvik jacket.
