Removable Chin Bar helmets

Removable chin bar helmets are all about flexibility. You can wear them as a full-face lid when you’re cruising at speed or hitting open roads, and then take the chin bar off entirely for the open-face experience when you’re riding around town or enjoying a slower Sunday blast.

This is not the same as a flip-front or flip-over helmet. With those, the chin section stays attached - it just lifts up or swings around. With a removable chin bar helmet, you physically detach that lower section. It’s a modular concept in the truest sense.

Some models are dual homologated (known as P/J rated), which means they’re certified for both open-face and full-face use. Others aren’t - and that’s important. If the helmet isn’t P/J rated, legally speaking, it should only be used in its full-face mode when riding.

This type of helmet suits riders who value versatility over outright performance, maybe commuters, maybe occasional tourers, maybe scooter riders who want the best of both worlds. The convenience is hard to argue with.

As ever, we only stock removable chin bar helmets that meet our standards for fit, safety and real-world performance. Visit us in Guildford to try one on, or order online with free UK next-day delivery and easy returns.

Schuberth J2 helmet in Sigma blue

Robin: Another excellent helmet from Schuberth...

I have long seen the benefits and shortcomings of open-face helmets and when my last one died of old age it was time to look for another... I was aware Schuberth were launching their new J2 and it was looking like a two-horse race between that and the Shoei J-Cruise 3. For a number of reasons, the Schuberth appealed to me, mainly the fact it was closely based upon their existing C5 flip-front helmet, which I already own and Im really pleased with. The excellent video presentation on the J2 by Chris helped me decide. Another plus for the J2 is the fact I could fairly easily swap my Schuberth SC2 comms system between the two Schuberth helmets. A five-minute job at most. Thus far I have only used the J2 once on a 120-mile ride, and Ive got to say Im very pleased with it. It oozes quality. The attention to detail is excellent and its as comfortable as my C5, although a little noisier, but as Chris explained in his video, those three decibels can make all the difference! The great advantage from my point of view is the greater field of view provided by the bigger visor and the much freer airflow on hot days. I entirely accept the fact open-face helmets dont provide the facial protection afforded by full-face and flip-front helmets, although there is perhaps a degree of compromise with the removable chin bar on the J2. The chin bar is much narrower than those on full-face and flip-front helmets, and the fact it isnt a permanent fixture doesnt fill me huge confidence in terms of protection should the worst happen. Yes, open-face helmets like the Schuberth J2 and the Shoei J-Cruise 3 present greater risks than full-face and flip-front helmets, but hey the greatest risk we take is simply getting on a bike in the first place. If youre up for an open-face helmet I can thoroughly recommend the Schuberth J2, and of course Motolegends for their superb customer service. Thank you...
