The knee pocket is not a new concept. It is much employed in the off-road world; and that’s because if you’re wearing a wide-legged, off-road pant to go over a large off road boot, there is a danger that, if you come off, any armour that is fixed to the trouser might move, and not actually protect the knee. When you wear a knee sock, by contrast, the armour does not move, and so your knee will always be fully covered by the protector.
There may be some knee pockets out there that take D30 armour, but we couldn’t source any, until we found these ones from Endura in a bicycle shop. But the armour they contain is exactly the same as D3O motorcycle armour, and so we have decided to stock them.
Now you could wear these inside a protective motorcycle jean or pant to replace the armour in the pant itself, but these knee socks are not really intended for road riding, although there are some circumstances where you might choose to wear them on the road.
The D3O Ghost armour pockets that we also offer are aimed specifically at the road rider. These ones are more about off-road riding; and off road these are the best choice because they will cup the knee more securely, and give better coverage of the knee itself.
They can be worn over the top of, say, a base layer, but inside an off-road pant. Or they can be worn on the outside of a motorcycle trouser, and that’s made possible by the fact that these knee pockets attach by means of two Velcro flaps.
Of course, you could also wear them over the top of a pair of something like a protective jean. They would look a little unsightly, but the benefit over the Ghost knee socks we offer is that when you reach your destination you can take it off, and throw them in the top box. So you don’t have to visit the loo to remove them!
The D3O armour in these pockets is LP1 Level 1, but the armour could be removed from the sock, and replaced with LP2 Level 2 D30, if required.
These knee pockets come in three sizes, dictated by the circumference of the wearers thigh.
