Schuberth C5/E2 sport fit lining set 61 Product Information
There is a key flaw in the sizing of all Schuberth helmets.
Now people like Arai and Shoei offer three or more shell sizes in their helmets. And this is considered to be the minimum requirement to be able to offer a comfortable fit across the range of head sizes.
But to save money Schuberth has always attempted to achieve this objective with just two shell sizes. In truth, this has never really worked, but it has become a particular problem on Schuberth’s current C5 and E2 derivative.
The problem is the huge increase in shell size from the Large(59)helmet to the Extra Large(61) helmet. If anybody ever found the Large a little on the snug side they would find the Extra Large loose like a bucket!
It was, and is, a pretty major design flaw, but in acknowledgement of this Schuberth has recently brought out what they call a ‘Sport Fit’ lining that basically sleeves down the Extra Large to create a fit that sits between the two.
Now that’s a good thing. It means that Schuberth has acknowledged the problem, and has done something to attempt to resolve it.
The bad thing is that Schuberth expects you to pay £145 for the kit. And to us that seems a bit rich given that it has been created to overcome a problem of Scuberth’s own making.
If you already have an Extra Large C5 or E2 and it’s too large, you might consider paying this price to get it to fit properly, but even then it’s still a bit cheeky.
But, in truth, here in the shop if we’re doing a fitting and we come across this issue we wouldn’t have the gall to suggest an extra £145 to get the helmet to fit properly.
At that point I think we would be suggesting that we give you a PFS fitting on a Shoei.
We like Schuberth, and if a C5 or an E2 fits you they’re great helmets, but one cannot escape the fact that Schuberth is venture capital owned. Along with the fact that their changeable headliners only work on 50% of their helmets, the two shell sizes tells us that Schuberth’s focus is a short-term one.
Schuberth is no Shoei. And that’s a shame, because it could be.
