Motorcycle Mid Layers

In winter you should be wearing a mid-layer over your technical base-layer. A mid-layer come in all shapes and sizes. A fleece is a mid-layer. As is a jacket containing hollow-form fibres. Heavier Merino makes for a brilliant mid-layer. And then there’s our favourite, a down jacket. A down jacket is a great insulator, but a down jacket makes any motorcycle jacket more comfortable. And it works just as well off the bike as on it.

Klim Zephyr Wind shirt in asphalt

RM: It does what is said on the tin

Had the opportunity to purchase and try for 30 days if not happy money back+ a 33 discount. Couldnt resist. Test carried out on a F900R naked bike and a R1250RS. I had a technical Rohan T-shirt, Forcefield Armoured shirt with D30 inserts and Klim Baja S4. I normally use a LaFuma wind stopper. It just works. On the 1250 RS Zephyr works down to 14C on the F 900 started to feel cold by 16C. I used a BMW Goretex waterproof jacket on both the bikes and I was perfectly fine. I also tried a combination of LaFumaZephyrS4 and no waterproof jacket at 8C on both bikes I normally have the heat jacket with the LaFuma and I was perfectly fine and comfortable. Works well as a layering system. Packs down small. Fits in a cargo pocket easily. BMW sell a similar jacket for £140 so is also good value. Very pleased with the jacket.

Klim Zephyr Wind shirt in grey

Bob: Even better than my old EDZ shell

Ive had an EDZ windproof layer for many 20 maybe years. I dont think they make them any more. It was losing a hem line. Got too tight for a bit Oooh, food! and then fit perfectly again right, time to lose some weight. It squashed down into a tennis ball - literally a split open tennis ball - and has been fantastic. However, ... The Cap keeps telling me how good this Klim thing is, and it has a full-length zip instead of just at the neck. It has a little stretch - to be fair, even more than the EDZ. Its tough and looks pretty good. Ive been using it for a month now and the EDZ is consigned to the Ill just tuck it in this box in case I even need it pile. Honestly though, if it ever came to that, Id buy another Zephyr. If you follow the layering approach, which I also highly recommend, this is the perfect windproof layer under an airy breathable jacket. Highly recommended!

Klim Maverick down jacket in stealth black

Chris Beale: Superb

Perfect for chilly morning starts or any time when a quickly deployable warm layer is needed. Not just for motorcycling either, fishing trips have become a lot warmer with the Maverick. A key component of Klims layer system, it can be worn over or under the Zephyr windproof, offering degrees of warmth and wind protection. It looks good worn as casual clothing too.
