Rukka Air Vihti pants in black Product Information
In early 2025 Rukka brought out two, high-airflow jackets in an attempt to take on the Klim Marrakesh jacket. These jackets are the Air Karvik and the Air Vihti. This pant has been designed to work with either jacket to create a suit.
Now in contrast to the Marrakesh jacket, which we love, we cannot say that we have always felt so enthusiastic about the matching Marrakesh pants.
First, they are too narrow. Now we often fancy the Marrakesh for adventure and off-road riding. But in an attempt, we believe, not to impact on sales of their off-road focussed Baja S4 suit, Klim decided a few years ago to make the Marrakesh pant so tight at the ankle that you can't even get them over a touring boot.
Second, whilst we love D3O armour, and whilst we have always thought that their Ghost armour works well in jeans, we have long felt that Ghost was too 'mobile' to work in a looser pant like this.
Third, we have an ongoing disagreement with Klim about where knee armour is meant to sit. Being literally-minded folk, we prefer knee armour to sit on the knee. All too often Klim's knee armour sits halfway up the thigh. And when this is the case, there's not enough adjustment to move it in to a better position.
The Air Vihti pant is constructed from a stretch-infused 500 denier Cordura. Now the Marrakesh pants start out with a much stronger 1000 denier, stretch-Cordura, although both trousers meet the AA standard for abrasion resistance.
In terms of airflow, there's not going to be much to choose between the two brands, but both pants will flow more air than even the nicest, single-layer jean; and more than any traditional, mesh-panelled trouser. With the Rukka pants you do get some panels of even higher airflow, AFT Cordura material inside the knees, but we don't this will be a game changer.
The first major point of difference between the Klim and the Rukka pants is the armour. The Klim pants come with Level 1, D30 Ghost. The Rukka pant comes with shaped, Level 2 D3O. In a pant like this we think that 'shaped' is better, but of course it's also Level 2, so this will make the Rukka pants far more protective from both an impact and an abrasion-resistance perspective, although we do offer an exchange programme to upgrade the Marrakesh's armour to Level 2 Diablo.
We have mentioned that there's no zip at the hem of the Marrakesh pant, and that they will barely go over anything more robust than an ankle boot. Well, with long zips and a wider opening at the bottom of the leg you can wear the Air Vihti pants over any touring boot, and over most adventure boots.
Now our most common refrain when it comes to the Marrakesh, be it the jacket or the pant, is that it doesn't come in enough sizes. Both the top and bottom halves come in just six sizes, meaning that too many people fall between them. Too big for one; too small for the next one up.
The Air Vihti pant comes in eleven sizes; and that will make a huge difference. Those who couldn't be accommodated in a Marrakesh pant will, we suspect, find no such issue with the Rukka Vihtis. Both pants, by the way, come in three leg lengths, although the Rukka long leg had not yet come through when we uploaded this copy on to the web.
In terms of colourways, there are six colours in the Marrakesh jacket, and three in the pant. With Rukka there's only one colour option for the pant; and it's a choice that Henry Ford would probably have approved of.
There are some other things you get with the Rukka pants that you don't get with the Klims; features you will find on most Rukka trousers. So we are talking about Velcro pouches for Rukka's excellent Defence braces. Their AirCushion and Antiglide systems in the seat. And a full-length connecting zip to connect to an appropriate jacket. You also get two, zip pockets on the thighs.
Just one minor point. Rukka talk about the pants being compatible with their Gore-Tex Stretch, waterproof over-pants; and I'm sure they are. But these are huge money. In just about every practical respect you'd be better off with a set of Scott waterproof leggings.
We are not completely convinced by Rukka's Marrakesh jacket alternatives. We acknowledge that they better the Klim jackets in some ways. But they're a bit Germanic. They are not as comfortable. They won't work as well with layers. And they don't look as good. But we cannot say the same about the matching Rukka pants. In almost every respect pertaining to fit and function they are better than the Klim pants.
Anyway, as ever, it will come down to fit. You could order online, and take a risk; or you could visit us. There's nowhere where you are going to be able to compare and contrast the two options in the way that you can here. And that's for two simple reasons. We hold more Klim stock than anybody in the country. And we hold more Rukka stock than anybody in the country.
