Mesh Motorcycle Trousers

When the temperature hits the high 20s centigrade it is normally time to find a trouser without a waterproof membrane. Basically, any trouser with a waterproof membrane is likely to prove too hot in even the UK summer. Even with vents, the waterproof membrane acts as a windproof membrane and will stop the breeze reaching (and cooling) the body.

Mesh motorcycle trousers are designed primarily for use in hot weather. Rather than prioritising waterproofing, they use large areas of open, abrasion-resistant mesh to allow a high volume of air to pass through the garment while riding. We stock a variety of non-waterproof motorcycling trousers from single A rated mesh trousers suitable for urban riding to something like a AA rated Klim trouser which can be worn touring the world. There is also the option of motorcycle jeans, which in our view are even nicer than mesh trousers for riding in hot weather!

What we think, is that mesh motorcycle trousers are best viewed as a specialist garment. For riders who regularly ride in high temperatures, or who struggle with heat management in summer, they can make an enormous difference to comfort. For year-round riding, some motorcyclists will still require an alternative, more weather-resistant option. However, there is always the option to layer up with a mesh trouser, which if you ride for leisure may be a nicer option. Something such as the Held waterproofs can be used for weather protection and a set of base layers can be used for warmth.

Westie: Extremely comfortable

I was a bit apprehensive buying these after Motolegends review saying the ankle was tight and might not fit over boots. I neednt of worried, as they go over my Alpinestars touring boot with no issues. They are extremely comfortable, and the material stretches easily when moving round the bike, standing whilst riding and anything in between. Whilst they do flow air, its only marginally more than jeans unless I stand up, when it is noticeable. The armour pockets are well placed as well. The side zipped pockets are deep and large enough to fit my wallet and keys in comfortably. Fantastic service from Motolegends as always. Cannot recommend them enough as a shop, and Id recommend the Klim Marrakesh pants as well.

Being Rukka these trousers are well made and substantial, as anyone who has owned Rukka gear will attest to this is par for the course, they also fit well and Rukka sizing is such that almost anyone will be able to get the correct fit unlike the offerings from Klim. They flow plenty of air, and most importantly allow you to sweat properly without becoming soaked, as the condensate can escape owing to the design of the fabric. They are all day comfortable, although as with any Rukka trousers they are probably best worn with braces lets face it, these are not a stylish propostition in any event, so braces arent going to make things any worse!. I also own a pair of Rokker Legends, and can confirm that the Rukkas do flow more air. Why do I choose to ride in these over a good pair of jeans? in the first instance they are cooler at speed and you wont get as clammy in pari passu weather, secondly it is undeniable that the armour is huge and correspondingly the margins of protection particularly at higher speeds will be greater - how much of a consideration this is is a personal matter. Overall I would say that these trousers are the choice if you are going on a serious days ride in hotter conditions covering several hundred miles. if you are going out for a Sunday bimble, a pair of jeans is likely to be better. If there is one very small criticism it is that due to the loose design of what I would describe as the blind hem of the trouser is loose, which means I end up getting my feet stuck in the lower leg area, requiring a bit of faffing to clear the snagged material. A solution might be to stitch this blind hem to the outer chassis of the trouser, thus preventing feet getting stuck. Who knows, maybe it is just me it would not be the first time!.

Wendy: Comfortable Summer Riding in the Heat

I picked up the Klim Marrakesh trousers in Asphalt mainly because I wanted something lighter than black for summer riding. I ended up testing them properly on a long weekend in Wales, which just so happened to land during one of the hottest UK weekends on record around 32C. Not exactly gentle conditions! They werent quite as airy as I was expecting, but honestly I was never uncomfortable. The fabric has loads of stretch, so they just move with you rather than clinging on like jeans or some other riding trousers can when its hot. I also really appreciated how easy they were to get on and off, even after a long, sweaty day in the saddle. I ride a Triumph Tiger, so I get a fair bit of hot air blasting onto my upper legs from the engine, and I was pleasantly surprised that the trousers handled that really well. It never felt like an issue. Sizing-wise, Id definitely say consider going down a size. Im a UK womens size 16 and originally went for a mens 34, but they were way too roomy. The 32 fits much better, which just shows how generous Klims sizing is. For reference, I wear a womens medium in the Marrakesh jacket. Overall, Im really happy with them. Theyre super comfortable, really flexible, and just easy to live with on hot rides. They might not be the absolute breeziest trousers out there, but the comfort and movement more than make up for it.
