Base Layers

Base layers are particularly important garments when it comes to riding comfortably on the bike, yet they are poorly understood, and so are often disregarded by motorcyclists. One of the main benefits of a base layer is its ability to wick moisture away from the body. Many motorcyclists wear cotton shirts of some description beneath their technical motorcycle wear, but this is the worst thing to wear. If you work hard and get warm on the bike, and you end up sweating, a cotton top will make you feel wet and clammy, because it simply absorbs the moisture. In the rain, this may well make you feel as though your outerwear is leaking, but this may not be the case at all. In the summer, one might wear a lightweight Nylon base layer. In the Winter, you might move to a heavier, synthetic layer, or even Merino wool pieces. But with a modern technical jacket, you will probably not need a mid-layer, as most good quality jackets will almost certainly have a thermal liner.
