Motorcycle Base Layers

Wearing the correct base layers is one of the most important things to do when you are motorcycling. Too often customers spend a lot of money on a decent suit and then ruin it by wearing a cotton T-shirt!

Base layers need to be a proper breathable material so they help you regulate your body temperature.  It is about keeping warm in winter, keeping cool in summer, allowing your body sweat to evaporate effectively and allowing your expensive suit to do its job properly. Even in winter sweat needs to escape to keep the body dry. And this is crucial because if you are wet on the inside, and the temperature drops further our bodies will lose heat 20 times faster through a wet environment than a dry one. The base layer is a building block in winter on top of which you need a technical mid layer.

We stock base layers from motorcycling brands like Halvarssons, Rukka and Klim but also specialist merino layers from Icebreaker.

Klim Maverick down jacket in insignia blue

Stephen Pennell: Bought on sale

The Klim Maverick Down Jacket in Insignia Blue 2XL is an absolute winner from Motolegends. Its incredibly warm for its weight, packs down small, and layers perfectly under a riding jacket without feeling bulky. The fit in 2XL is spotonroomy enough for comfort but still nicely shaped. The build quality is exactly what youd expect from Klim premium materials, great stitching, and a reassuringly durable feel. The Insignia Blue colour looks superb in person too. A brilliant bit of kit for coldweather riding or everyday wear.

Klim Zephyr Wind shirt in blue

Peter Wood: Klim Zephyr Brilliant bit of kit

Bought one of these a year ago to replace a bit of technical ski wear Ive been using when bike touring. Its warm comfortable and exactly what you require from a second layer. its full brilliance is that you can squish it into a pocket, it takes up less space than a T shirt. My Zephyr was borrowed stolen by my daughter in law whilst we were touring Northern Europe and she too thought it a brilliant piece of kit. Now all the motorcyclists in the family have one, If it looks like its going to get colder stuff a Zephyr into a tank bag or pocket. If it looks to get warmer, leave wearing it and as the temperature rises stuff the Zephyr into pockettank bag.
