Motorcycle Base Layers

Wearing the correct base layers is one of the most important things to do when you are motorcycling. Too often customers spend a lot of money on a decent suit and then ruin it by wearing a cotton T-shirt!

Base layers need to be a proper breathable material so they help you regulate your body temperature.  It is about keeping warm in winter, keeping cool in summer, allowing your body sweat to evaporate effectively and allowing your expensive suit to do its job properly. Even in winter sweat needs to escape to keep the body dry. And this is crucial because if you are wet on the inside, and the temperature drops further our bodies will lose heat 20 times faster through a wet environment than a dry one. The base layer is a building block in winter on top of which you need a technical mid layer.

We stock base layers from motorcycling brands like Halvarssons, Rukka and Klim but also specialist merino layers from Icebreaker.

Klim Zephyr Wind shirt in asphalt

GerryM: Works

Grabbed a bargain during a weekend sale, so £67 was a no brainer. The jacket is incredibly light but is windproof and does retain warmth. I ride a Transalp 750 and am 5 8 with standard screen etc. With an office shirt, Rukka down jacket, Klim Zephyr all topped off with a Klim Badlands jacket no lining whatsoever I managed the one hour commute across 4 motorways at about -2-3 deg C. I did start to notice the cold in my upper arms but not anything to write home about. In +single digit temperatures 5 deg C the Rukka gets changed out for a down gilet and about the same effect. Finger tips in a Halvarssons Butorp glove with silk under gloves are.... frozen. I need to rethink my glove choices! Not suggesting this will work like this for everyone but Ive used a bike as my primary mode of transport for about a decade, hence more than a degree of acclimatisation. As usual, ML service has been faultless and are the primary choice for bike kit.

Stephen: Klim Zephyr

Bought as an extra layer for the early morning commute. Incredibly thin and light but also keeps the windchill at bay. Kept it on under my work jacket as our uniform soft shell isnt breathable. Great bit of kit.

Calvin: Essential Kit

This an essential piece of kit, simple, effective multi purpose for on or off the bike. Its up there with my Klim Zephyer I recently purchased as a must have when layering up. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.
