Waxed Cotton motorcycle jackets
Waxed Cotton motorcycle jackets were some of the very earliest motorcycle jackets, from companies like Barbour and Belstaff, were made from wax cotton. Initially they were used by sailors. Today, wax cotton is very much in fashion, but it’s also very practical. A wax cotton motorcycle jacket does not easily absorb moisture. In fact, rain tends to run off it. But if you combine a wax cotton outer with a waterproof membrane, you can end up with a very high level of waterproofing. But practical as wax cotton can be as a material for a motorcycle jacket, its popularity is linked to its classic heritage. Today, the best of wax cotton jackets are, without doubt, Belstaff jackets. They make the best. You can wear wax cotton jacket on a classic bike, on a modern retro, a custom bike, or indeed any kind of naked motorcycle. McGregor and Boorman also made wax cotton very popular with adventure bike riders. Wax cotton makes for a great jacket that you can wear all year round.

Belstaff Crosby jacket in black
I had a Trailmaster back in the 70s when they were cheap, tough and waterproof. They were also smelly, cold in winter and too hot in summer, but I loved mine. When I returned to motorcycles in 98 I didnt even consider one, particularly because of the high price - Id actually chucked out two pairs of jackets and trousers. Weirdly the prices of these jackets now seem approximately reasonable. I realised I missed my old Belstaff, even compared to the newer jackets Ive owned. So I bought a Crosby. Its pretty much exactly as I remember Belstaffs, stiff to begin with, but not as smelly and a bit warmer thanks to the drop liner. It hasnt surprised me in any way, its just like an old, slightly grubby friend. Whats not to like ?
Belstaff Crosby jacket in sand
I bought this jacket as I had a tour coming up and needed a new one. On arrival I tried it on and it was a good, if slightly tight fit. First ride out was a 200 mile round trip to Aberdeen and back to Inverness, where it hammered Highland rain all the way.No leakages and no drips, so very pleased. Then came a tour to Northern Ireland over the hottest weekend of the year. For most of the trip it was perfectly comfortable but when it got tp 32 degrees I rode with jacket open to get some air in. Later in the week got caught in a heavy downpour, and again no leaks or drips. After a week of riding the jacket seems to have moulded itself to me and is very comfortable. I like the pockets as well, and the inner one kept my phone dry. The only downside is the cuffs are quite tight meaning gloves have to go over the sleeves, so water could get into the gloves from drips from the arms. That said, I didnt actually have any problems. Overall, after 1500 miles I am impressed. For size purposes, I am a slim large with 42 inch chest.
Belstaff Trialmaster jacket in mahogany
Second trialmaster to replace my 20 year old one. Firstly, the sizing is completely different. My old one is a large and fitted perfectly but the new one is an XL and I am definitely not. Im 59 43 chest 34 waist and even the XL is a slim fit, particularly with a back protector fitted. Great free returns with Motolegends to exchange for the larger size The old jacket was definitely not waterproof , not even showerproof really even after re proofing. The new jacket has a waterproof liner but Ive only worn it in light rain. But lets be honest, you wouldnt be buying this jacket as a Toptastic technical jacket. It just looks cool as. In my head I am Steve McQueen..yeah,I know he wore a Barbour
