Belstaff Humber jacket in black Product Information
The outer chassis of the Belstaff Humber is identical to that of the classic Brooklands jacket. That is to say that it's made from a British Millerain fabric that is known a Ultracore. Now unlike traditional waxed cotton Ultracore comprises a mix of cotton and Polyester. Belstaff suggests that the material used on the Humber is equivalent to an 8-ounce waxed cotton.
What does this mean? Well it means that there's some heft to the Humber. As a shorter blouson-style jacket you could potentially wear it in the summer months, but it's never going to flow a lot of air.
And that's because a combination of a waterproof membrane and the wax coating of the outer shell will both act as barriers to breathability. The upside here is that the Humber will do a good job of keeping the wind at bay and helping you to stay warm. The combination of the wax and the membrane also mean that this is a jacket that is unlikely to ever leak, so to speak.
From an abrasion-resistance perspective the Humber rates AA, which is all you'd ever want or expect in a jacket of this ilk. Make a jacket like this in an AAA fabric and you would feel the penalty in terms of weight and comfort.
The armour in the Humber is vented Level 1 D3O, but it's the shaped stuff and not Ghost. And this we think is the right choice for the jacket. Flat Ghost armour would move around too much. The armour that Belstaff has fitted also gives the jacket a better, more defined shape, especially in the shoulders.
There's a pocket for a back protector. We'd probably go for a Level 2 protector from Rheon. It's nicer, more flexible and a lot more breathable than the equivalent from D3O. At just £49.99, it's also a bit cheaper.
In terms of pockets you get one zipped one on the chest and two hand-warmer style pockets below. There's a Napoleon pocket with a zip for your wallet inside the jacket.
For added ventilation you get one vent on each bicep.
The main zip up the front of the jacket, like the ones on the pockets and the vents, are in an antique brass finish. All the zips, as one might hope, are YKK.
Behind the main zip which, of course, is not waterproof there's a storm flap with a rain gutter to ensure that rain is not getting through the front of the jacket to the body.
To adjust the fit at the hem you get a two-position popper arrangement. You get the same at the ends of the sleeves. What you don't get are zips at the ends of the sleeves, but then again you don't get them on any Belstaff jacket. Again all the poppers are finished in antique brass. All except the one at the base of the zip that is rubberised to protect the bike's tank.
As with all Belstaff jackets you get corduroy lining the collar. You get a plaid interior. And on the shoulders and elbows you get padded baffles. Are they there for added protection? Well probably not; they’re more about styling than function. The back of the jacket is very marginally lowered, although to an extent that is going to make next to no difference on the bike. You also get a couple of elasticated loops that are designed to allow you to fasten the jacket to a pant via a belt.
