Richa Orion GTX jacket in blue / black Product Information

The Richa Orion is a classic, touring and commuting jacket.

It is constructed using a two-layer, laminated Gore-Tex membrane. Garments with two-layer membranes tend to be more comfortable and easier to live with than garments with three-layer membranes, but what makes the Orion even more comfortable is that its outer chassis contains an element of four-way stretch.

The laminated membrane will ensure that this a jacket that will never wet out. The fact that the membrane is a Gore-Tex one means that waterproofing will be guaranteed for life.

The jacket's main zip is not waterproof, per se; but that's not uncommon. Behind the zip is a rain gutter, and it is this that will catch any water that finds its way into the jacket. Some jackets have an external storm flap, but generally an internal one makes for a more comfortable jacket.

In terms of its protective qualities, the jacket's outer chassis is rated AA under EN17092 for abrasion resistance. The armour is D3O. It is their traditional, shaped armour, but is only Level 1. I have to say that we would be minded to upgrade to Level 2 Diablo. You would be upgrading the level of protection, but ironically increasing the jacket's comfort, as L2 Diablo is softer, lighter and more breathable than the jacket's standard, Level 1, D3O armour.

The additional cost would be around £60. The jacket does not come with a back protector. The best option would be the Level 2 protector from Rheon. Another £50, I'm afraid. The jacket will also take Richa's D3O two-part, L1, chest protector.

The jacket comes with the kind of removable, thermal liner that you find in many jackets. It zips into the outer jacket, but cannot be worn off the bike as a destination jacket. The liner is filled with an un-named hollow-form fibre of some description. Clearly it will do a job, but you could easily find something lighter and thinner that would be just as, or even more, effective. I'm thinking specifically of the excellent Rukka Lahti.

One of the much vaunted benefits of laminated garments is their direct-to-body venting. Well the Orion has two long, vertical vents on the chest. The zips at the ends of the sleeves are two way; and so if undone from the top they too can act as vents to allow cool air to run up the sleeves. To allow air that enters the jacket to escape, you also get an exhaust vent that runs between the shoulders at the back of the jacket. Finally, there's a vented flap that can be zipped into place behind the main zip, so that you can ride with the main zip undone, and get more air into the jacket

In terms of pockets, you get two, handwarmer-style, zipped pockets at the sides, and one large map pocket at the back of the jacket . Inside the jacket you get two, top-loading pockets that secure with Velcro. There are two more in the liner. All of these will be waterproof.

In terms of adjusting the fit, there's a fixed, elasticated band that runs around the jacket at the waist level that will allow the jacket to expand a little if you are wearing layers. You also get an elasticated drawstring in the collar and another at the hem of the jacket.

As with most Richa jackets it comes with both long and short, connecting zips. Other details include 3M reflective detailing for better nighttime visibility.
