Stylmartin Rocket boots in black Product Information
The Rocket is one of Stylmartin's longest standing boots.
It's an all-leather boot, but its standout feature is probably the height of its shaft. This notionally makes the Rocket more protective than most ankle boots, and almost certainly it makes it more waterproof.
If there's any downside to the way the boot is designed it's that it can be harder to get into than some boots. There's a full-length zip up the inside of the boot, but as ever with a waterproof boot with a zip there's a waterproof gusset that stops you opening the boot completely. This having been said, the gusset is quite generous. Nevertheless it's unlikely that everybody is going to be able to get in and out of these boots without using the laces; an action that requires the buckled belt to be undone.
One of the benefits of the Rocket is that it works really well with jeans. If you like to wear your biking jeans so they're the right length on the street they will inevitably be short on the bike. And if you're wearing an ankle boot that can leave skin exposed, which is never a good thing. Indeed, that's why we advocate wearing a jean 'long' on the street so that it's not too short on the bike. Well, this issue partially disappears when you wear a very tall, ankle boot. And the Rocket is indeed a very tall, ankle boot!
There is a difference between the black and brown versions of the boot in terms of the leather they're made from.
The brown version employs what Stylmartin call their 'Writer' leather; it's a leather they consider to be their most prestigious and high quality. The leather is treated to give it an antique and vintage appearance. A glossy resin is applied, and the re-applied by hand, allowing the background leather to show through. This process gives the leather what Stylmartin calls a 'sophisticated' patina. The more you wear the boot the more it tells a story, apparently! And they're not wrong, although we would say that the leather looks better if you continue to add polish.
The black version of the Rocket is made from a greased, full-grain leather. It probably makes for a more waterproof boot.
The real waterproofing, of course, comes from a breathable, waterproof membrane.
In terms of protection, you get a really strong counter on the toe. There's a similarly stiff counter in the heel. You also get foam-backed inserts for the ankles. There's an extra layer of leather across the toe for the gearchange.
The outsole is what Stylmartin call their 'Special Grip' sole. It's basically a copy of a Commando sole. To the casual observer the Rocket looks to have a welt, but this isn't a welted boot. But that doesn't mean that you won't be able to replace the sole when that becomes necessary. Any cobbler should be up to the job. The Rocket comes with a replaceable, anatomic insole, as indeed do all off Stylmartin's ankle boots.

Philip Cheese: Excellent boots
I’ve had these just over a week, after the usual first rate Motolegends buying experience. They are indeed comfortable straight from the box, both on and off the bike, and not too hot even in this weather. They are a bit taller than most “short” boots, which is why I picked them out over some more expensive offerings, but the quality is such that I’d have been happy if I’d paid 50% more. Might have to get the Brown pair to match...
thomas millar: black rockets
Excellent boots ordered my normal size and they fit perfectly, comfortable right out of the box, seem well made. the only nit-pick would be the laces are very long and bunch up behind the strap at the top of boot, answer buy a shorter lace no real biggie. best design lace up out there, regards.tom millar
Steve Royer: If one is good, two...
About a year ago I got a pair of the Rockets in brown to go with a new brown jacket and loved them. When the black became available I knew I had to get a pair to go with my older black jacket. Perfect fit right out of the box, easy 1-time adjustment of the laces and strap then easy zip on/off. Size 10 shoe is a size 43 boot. The 'greasy' black leather polishes up well if that is your preference. Very comfortable on and off the bike for a recent 2 day event. Best classic boots out there in my opinion.
Steve Royer: Two Better Than One.
Having bought a pair of the brown Rockets to go with a new brown Helstons jacket and was very happy with them, I decided to get a pair of the black ones to go with an old black Spidi jacket as well. Strangely, these were even more comfortable out of the box than the first. Great to walk in or ride. Size 10 shoe, Size 43 boots. No break-in problems as some have noted. The greased black polishes up beautifully if you wish. Simple initial adjust of laces and strap and your good to go, easy on/off. Excellent soles too. Can't think of any cons. In my opinion, these are the best classic boots out there. Oh, and super fast 3-day turnaround and shipping to the U.S. Thanks ML.
