The Belstaff Kate's Cottage is a new, waxed-cotton jacket that has been introduced for 2025.
It's got some interesting features; there are some things about it that we really like, but not everybody is going to be charmed by it, because it's probably more about the bike than the look.
The Kate's Cottage is a jacket that sets out to combine the best features and virtues of both the Trialmaster and the Phillis jackets. It sits shorter than the Trialmaster. If it sits shorter or longer than the Phillis then it's not by much. But it feels much more robust. The material it's made from is an eight-ounce Ultracore waxed cotton from British Millerain. Belstaff claim that this material is actually lighter than normal waxed cotton, but more durable. All we can say is that the outer fabric feels more substantial than the material on the Trialmaster. It definitely has a less soft 'handle' as they call it.
The waxed cotton is backed with a waterproof membrane, albeit a 'drop-liner' one rather than a laminated one. But here's the thing. When you put a waterproof membrane behind a waxed cotton fabric you create a garment that's pretty much as waterproof as a laminated one. And that's because waxed cotton is naturally very water repellant. But add a membrane, and you've got something that is properly, properly waterproof, as it's unlikely that any rain, however much there is, is going to pass through both 'barriers'.
In terms of protection, the jacket meets the AA standard for abrasion resistance under EN 17092. And that's what we now expect from a modern, motorcycle jacket. The armour in the jacket is Level 1. It's D3O's highly-vented, shaped armour. And that's almost undoubtedly the best choice for a jacket like this. Ghost is too flimsy for a jacket as robust as this.
The jacket does not come as standard with a back protector. Right now our preference would be to go with a Level 2 protector from Rheon. It's not much heavier than a D3O Level 1 protector, yet it's infinitely more breathable, and it obviously delivers twice as much impact protection.
The problem with ladies' motorcycle jackets is that the female form comes in many configurations, but the challenge is often cinching the jacket in at the waist to give the wearer as much shape as possible. The ladies' Trialmaster uses a traditional belt. The Phillis used a pair of side adjusters. The Kate's Cottage employs poppered side adjusters, but there's a good two-and-a-half inches of adjustment on either side, so that seems more than enough to us.
Now something that ladies do often find useful on a slightly longer jacket is zipped gussets that allow the jacket to splay a little when you're sat on the bike. Well the Kate's Cottage gets to the same end point, but through a different mechanism. Basically, the back of the jacket is configured as a 6" tall flap. This is secured with poppers. Unfasten the poppers, and you will make the jacket much more accommodating when you're sat on the saddle.
In terms of other details, they're all pretty much what you'd expect on a Belstaff jacket. So we're talking about a plaid lining, corduroy in the collar. Metal aerators for ventilation. A belt and buckle arrangement to fasten the neck. One external, flap pocket and one Napoleon pocket up top. And two zipped, side-entry pockets below. There's another Napoleon pocket inside the jacket.
The front of the jacket is secured by a poppered placket, beneath which there's a full-length zip. The zips and poppers are all chunky, antique-brass affairs. The bottom popper, however, is silicon covered to prevent damage being done to the tank of the bike. The ends of the sleeves are lined with corduroy in the same way that the neck is. You can adjust the volume of the sleeves with a two-position, poppered flap. We would have preferred zips, but its omission is not a big deal. Finally, the jacket comes with two, sturdy, elasticated loops that can be used to secure the jacket to a trouser belt.
The Kate's Cottage jacket is not a fashion jacket. That doesn't mean that it's not a good-looking jacket. It is, but with this jacket the emphasis is on the motorbike. The Kate's Cottage is a proper, sturdy, biking jacket. In it, you'll stay warm and dry, although with no venting this is not a jacket for the warmest of conditions. You'll also be well protected in the Kate's Cottage.
All of which makes for an enticing proposition. If you are looking for a wearable, totally waterproof jacket that you can wear all year round, a jacket that is also going to look after you if it all goes wrong, then you should look at the Kate's Cottage.
