Drop Liner Membrane Motorcycle Jackets

There are three types of construction for a waterproof, motorcycle jacket. 'Drop-liner', 'laminated jacket' and 'removable liner'.

In a drop-liner garment, the membrane hangs independently inside the outer, protective layer. It is not removable, even though many people assume that the 'drop' nomenclature means that it can be dropped out of the jacket. This is incorrect; the membrane is fixed.

Drop-liner jackets will keep you dry, and are totally reliable. They normally offer better value than laminated jackets, they are more comfortable, are warmer in the winter, and cooler in hot weather.

The downside of a drop-liner jacket is that, in heavy and prolonged rain, water can pass through the outer fabric, and sit between the outer material and the membrane. In certain conditions, this accumulation of moisture can cause a rider to feel cold, because we lose body heat 20 times faster through a wet environment than through a dry one. This phenomenon is known as 'wetting out'; the other issue when this happens is that a jacket can take a long time to dry out.

But few of us ride in situations where 'wetting out' will occur. Which is why we are of the view that, for most motorcyclists, a drop-liner jacket is the best solution.

Belstaff Crosby jacket in black

Geoff Cadman: Heritage

Like the above reviewer, my first Belstaff was the Trialmaster that in 1968 cost my generous Dad around 40 quid. It was heavily advertised in the bike media by the living legend Sammy Miller. I froze my nethers off during my winter commuting to college in Wigan, grim at the best of times, but although my 16 year old self never understood layering, the elements never got through that waxed exterior. 58 years later inflation has nudged the price up a touch, but the quality and style is still there in the Crosby. So well made, so stylish, my wife loves it so much I expect shell get one. Theres good standard D30 armour and with my WarmSafe electric liner jacket, its good for all seasons. Great service from Motolegends as usual and I snapped this up in a discounted sale. Trivia note I normally go for an XL as Im a 42 chest and a proportionate 62 but that was not the best fit for me across the shoulders. The swap for a 2XL took a matter of days - perfect.

Dainese Carve Master 4 GTX jacket in black

Mark H: Great quality Jacket

I bought this to replace my tired Ducati Strada C4 jacket also made by Dainese. So i was confident the fit would be the same and i wasnt disappointed. A size 50 in both jackets suits me well. Its a very good quality jacket and looks really modern and stylish with lots of practicality. The build quality s top notch Dainese and it looks very breathable with lots of zip vents, but also very waterproof due to the Gortex lining but not tried out yet, waiting for the biking season to start in full force, but dont think i will be disappointed with its performance. A very good choice for a short blast and also a great choice for touring as well. Looks Great! Excellent service from Motolegends as always with speedy delivery and a very accurate and informative review from the chap in the cap before i made my purchase

Halvarssons Lysvik jacket in black

Des: Great value

Its a simple no frills jacket that is well made and does its job perfectly as a quick short trip easy throw on jacket. It is definitely worth more than the asking price. And again great service from Motolegends.
