Rukka Armour & Rukka Protectors
Rukka motorcycle gear has always been very much the pinnacle of motorbike protective wear. Since 2011 they have worked with D3O to ensure the armour included in Rukka jackets and Rukka pants is in line with the wider brand values. Rukka works only with the best - Gore-Tex, YKK, laminates, Armacor, Cordura etc etc.. So D3O was a natural partner.
Since that time, Rukka and D3O have developed armour specific to the brand. The D3O XTR Air Protectors are class leading. They reach the Level 2 under the CE 1621 standards but, more importantly, they are much, much larger than the standard D3O limb protectors. That has a big knock on effect on the protection levels of Rukka clothing.
The XTR Air protectors Level 2 limb protectors come as standard in all the Rukka mens jackets and trousers except the leather Blockrace jacket and the Spirit-R jacket which both take Ghost armour. All the ladies Rukka jackets and trousers take the standard D3O LP2 protectors.
The ladies jackets come with a Level 1 back protector which could be upgraded to the Level 2. With the Rukka mens jackets you need to check the individual specification. A few come with no back protectors; a couple with a Level 1, but most of them come with a Level 2 Allback XTR Air back protector included already.

Rukka RPS AFT D3O shirt
Wore this on a four-day hard enduro trip in Bulgaria. Cant comment on how protective it is because, unusually for me, I didnt fall off! What I can say is that its very comfortable because its fantastically well ventilated basically like an old-fashioned string vest and the armour moulds perfectly to your body once it warms up. Highly recommended
Rukka D3O Air XTR Level 2 shoulder armour set
It wasnt until recently that I appreciated motorcycle clothing armour has a finite lifespan, beyond which it will start to lose its effectiveness and no longer deliver the originally intended rider protection. The lifespan seems to be based on a range of factors, but suffice it to say the D3O amour in my still fully serviceable 12 year old Rukka suit was almost certainly past its Best Before date. An investment in a new set of shoulder and elbow protectors will have restored, or hopefully even improved the protection my Rukka jacket now affords me. During the replacement process I could see my old armour had some minor cracks where it had flexed over the years, and it had clearly lost some of its comfort compared with the replacements. I also replaced the D3O back protector with a younger version swapped out of my two-year old Marrakesh jacket. The Marrakesh now sports a Rheon level 2 back protector - see that review.
