The Stylmartin Legend Mid is a short version of the full-height Legend, which in styling terms is a classic, cruiser boot; what is sometimes known as an engineers’ boot.

 

The engineer’s boot is a classic piece of Americana. As the name suggests it is derived from the style of boot that was worn by the engineers who rode the footplates of the steam engines on the railroads. After the war this became the footwear of choice for motorcyclists. And what that means is that it became a staple for the V-twin fraternity. With whom it is still popular today.

 

The Legend Mid is made from an oiled, full-grain leather. This leather is quite waterproof, but the real waterproofing comes from a breathable, waterproof membrane.

 

Protection wise the Legend is equipped with a military-grade counter in the toe. The counter in the heel is pretty stiff too. In both ankles there are foam-backed, ankle protectors. A gearchange pad is sewn on to the voluminous toe box. 

 

Like the full-height version the Mid is easy too get in and out of. There are no laces to be bothered about. Ingress and egress are effected by means of a full-height zip up the inside of the boot. The boot comes with two, buckled straps. One at the top of the shaft. One across the forefoot. I suppose you could adjust the fit with them, but truth be told they are more decorative than functional.

 

The initiated might think that this boot has a proper, welted construction, but actually what it has is what is known as a ‘faux’ welt. The white thread may well be sewn through a welt, but that stitching doesn’t go through the midsole and the outsole. The outsole is a genuine, Vibram sole with a Commando-style tread pattern.

 

This Legend Mid is a boot for those who want that classic, cruiser look but in a boot that’s easier and lighter to wear. The height of the shaft means that the Mid is probably going to be a little less waterproof than its full-height cousin, but undoubtedly it will be lighter and easier to wear.
