Windproof layers

When riding a motorcycle, wind chill is often a greater enemy than rain. Even in relatively mild temperatures, sustained airflow at speed can strip heat from the body quickly and leave a rider feeling far colder than expected. A dedicated windproof layer is designed specifically to address this problem. Our favourite is Klim’s Zephyr wind shirt as it’s thin, packable and comes in a lady’s version!

Unlike a thermal mid-layer, which works by trapping warm air, a windproof garment acts as a barrier. By preventing moving air from passing through your clothing, it dramatically reduces heat loss and helps maintain a stable body temperature. The effect can be immediate and significant.

Windproof layers are typically lightweight and low in bulk, allowing them to be worn comfortably beneath a motorcycle jacket without restricting movement. Many are designed to be compact and easy to carry, making them a practical addition to a touring kit or daily commute.

It is important to understand their role within a layering system. A windproof garment is not necessarily insulated, nor is it always waterproof. Its primary purpose is to block wind penetration. In cooler conditions, it can be combined with a thermal layer for added warmth; in milder weather, it may be all that is required to take the edge off a chill.

For riders who experience fluctuating temperatures, early starts, or higher-speed motorway riding, a windproof motorcycle layer can make a disproportionate difference to comfort, often with very little added weight or complexity.

PAUL: Brilliant Product

Bought this shirt to wear under all my jackets and have to say it might be the best windproof layer Ive ever had. An icebreaker 2oo base layer then this then a leather or softshell or gortex jacket and your set in all conditions. Every biker could use one of these.

Peter Wood: Klim Zephyr Brilliant bit of kit

Bought one of these a year ago to replace a bit of technical ski wear Ive been using when bike touring. Its warm comfortable and exactly what you require from a second layer. its full brilliance is that you can squish it into a pocket, it takes up less space than a T shirt. My Zephyr was borrowed stolen by my daughter in law whilst we were touring Northern Europe and she too thought it a brilliant piece of kit. Now all the motorcyclists in the family have one, If it looks like its going to get colder stuff a Zephyr into a tank bag or pocket. If it looks to get warmer, leave wearing it and as the temperature rises stuff the Zephyr into pockettank bag.
