Shark OXO Motorcycle Helmets

Shark helmets have long been the leader in the 'flip-over' category. They may not have invented the category; that accolade goes to Roof helmets. But Shark has been making this style of helmet for more than 10 years.  The Shark OXO is the culmination of many years of refinement on the style.

The Shark OXO comes in six sizes. From XXS to 2XL. That's from 53cm to 64cm. Although there are only two shell sizes, there are six individual eps; one for each size.

The OXO is both P & J rated which means that it can be ridden legally as either an open-face or a full-face helmet. Obviously, it is an ECE 22-06 helmet.

Richard Pitman: Wind noise

I have reluctantly decided that I need to wear my vari focal glasses when riding, to that I can see the fuel and temperature readings on my Koso clocks. I wear an Arai full face on my Hornet, and a Bell open face on my vintage 175 Hondas. The OxO flip over is intended to replace both helmets. Im pleased with it, it is very comfortable and all the mechanisms work very easily. I was however surprised by the level of wind noise, much louder than either of the helmets mentioned above. I have not previously needed to wear earplugs, but I do now, which has fixed the noise issue. Build quality seems good. I downloaded an extensive user manual from the Shark website, which details how to remove the lining to adjust it for spectacle wearing. I confess that I have not yet tried to remove the lining, Im worried about breaking something and not being able to refit it.

Peter: Fantastic in town and on sub-60mph country roads

I have done over 1,000 miles in this helmet and I am really pleased, with some minor reservations. I previously had an Evo 2 for commuting in London and the Oxo is a massive improvement. The Evo chinbar used to rotate in an elliptical mechanism which was clever but 1 jammed now and again and 2 was very hard to close single-handed. The Oxo rotates about a conventional pivot point. It feels more robust, has not jammed and is easy to close at 60mph with one hand. Despite what Chriss review says, the visor does have a just-open detent position. Overall it feels much higher quality than the Evo and I have found it very comfortable. Niggles are 1 its quite noisy, even with earplugs. I bought the comms kit and you cant use it above about 60mph. 2 The venting is poor so it gets warm at motorway speeds on a hot day. There are better helmets if you want something to cruise in at 70-80mph. But...in town or doing 50mph through the countryside it is just a lovely thing to wear. You can rotate the chinbar for lots of air flow while still having good cheekface protection and you can also lower the main visor if you find the sun visor too breezy. If you want a townmedium speed helmet for nice weather, its in a league of one. I would give it a 4.5 stars if I could. Better venting and less noise would make it a 5 for me.
