Motorcycle Helmets

A motorcycle helmet is, without doubt, the most important piece of motorcycle protective wear you will ever buy. And do, naturally, we're often asked: “What’s the Best Helmet?” or “Which helmet is the safest?”. But it's not that simple - because a helmet is only safe if it fits you properly. And fit isn't just about size; it's about shape, too.

This is why we're huge advocates of Shoei helmets. Their new Personal Fit System (Shoei PFS) - available here in our Guildford shop - allows us to take a digital head scan and tailor the internal padding for a truly custom fit. But we offer fitting tweaks for Arai, Schuberth and others too.

All helmets now have to meet the ECE 22-06 safety standard, but even within that, not all helmets are equal. In our opinion, Shoei and Arai sit at the very top. They don't do entry-level lids, they don't build to price points, and they invest heavily in R&D and shell construction. Safety is the priority - not gimmicks.

For tourers and commuters, we rate the Shoei Neotec 3 as the best flip-lid helmet out there. The Schuberth C5 runs it close and now also allows more flexible fitting and integrated comms options from both Sena and Cardo, including one with ANC!

Buy online with free UK next-day delivery and returns, or visit us in Guildford to get fitted by the people who fit more premium helmets than anyone else in Europe.

FAQs about motorcycle helmets:

What should I prioritise when choosing a motorcycle helmet?

When choosing a motorcycle helmet, fit comes first, even above brand, features or price. A helmet that doesn’t fit your head shape correctly won’t protect you as well in an impact and could be dangerously uncomfortable. That’s why Motolegends emphasises fit and shape over purely measurement. Safety standards like ECE 22-06 are essential, but a well-fitting helmet that conforms to your head shape will perform best in real-world scenarios.

Are some helmet brands safer than others?

All helmets sold at Motolegends meet the ECE 22-06 safety standard, but brands like Arai and Shoei stand out because they prioritise safety above all else. These brands invest heavily in research and development, avoid shortcut features that could compromise the shell, and focus on build quality and protective performance. They don’t build helmets to price, they build them to protect.

What helmet types are available and how do I choose?

There are several types of motorcycle helmets, and the best one depends on what sort of riding you are doing:

Full-face: Best all-round protection for road use.
Flip-up / modular: Combines full-face safety with convenience and best noise reduction.
Adventure: Good for mixed on and off-road riding.
Open-face: Great for relaxed urban or warm-weather riding, but less protection.

Shoei J.O2 helmet in matt black

Malcolm: Replacement helmet

Having realised that my last JO2 was past its best and also I had lost a bit of weight resulting in it lifting as I rode a replacement was needed. I did look at flip lids and the J cruise and came back to this helmet. The visor is great in the summer for bug protection and does keep rain out to a degree. Build quality is superb as expected and the fit suits me just right. Comfort is really good. I know many will not ride with an open face but if you do, then the JO2 is pretty much the best. Very happy. Thanks again Motolegends!

Shoei Neotec 3 helmet in white

Ian: PFS at Motolegends

I took delivery of my new motorbike a week ago, and had bought a new Shoei Neotec 3 from Motolegends as my old JO open face was coming to the end of its life. The opportunity arose to visit Guildford for a PFS appointment with Joe so I got one sorted out - nice and easy on the website. We arrived a bit early and were met by Naimh, who quickly arranged for Joe to see me and my Sister and Brother-in-law to look at trousers and gloves - all successful! The eagle-eyed Joe spotted my footwear and we instantly bonded over our support of the premier West Yorkshire football team. A change of headliner had the Neotec fitting perfectly - his reputation is well-deserved. Overall, a fantastic experience, and thoroughly recommended - thank you all.

Shoei Neotec 3 helmet in chalk grey

Martin Wilson: I took advantage of the free SPF offer.....

Free SPF if you bought your Shoei helmet from ML- agenerous offer. Neotec 2 bought 4 years ago - very happy with it but thought it wouldnt hurt to get a proper fitting - so...the PFS was great experience, highly recommended and Joe spotted where he could make the helmet fit a great deal better. So as not to hurt Chriss bottom line too much, while I was there, I bought a Neotec 3 and had a PFS on that too! Essentially ML are very nice people to do business with.
