Merino Base Layers

When it comes to riding comfort, what you wear underneath your motorcycle jacket and trousers is often as important as the outer garment itself. One of the most effective materials for base layers is Merino wool. Our favourite merino wool garments are from Icebreaker who use merino wool from New Zealand sheep. But, we also stock garments from Klim and Rukka.

Merino is a natural fibre that offers a combination of properties particularly well suited to motorcycling. It provides excellent temperature regulation, helping to keep you warm in cold conditions while remaining breathable in milder weather. Unlike traditional wool, Merino fibres are fine and soft, making them comfortable to wear directly against the skin.

A key benefit of Merino layers is moisture management. The fibre is able to absorb vapour from the body and release it gradually, helping to regulate temperature and reduce the clammy feeling that can occur with synthetic materials. Merino also has natural odour-resistant properties, which can make a noticeable difference on longer rides or multi-day trips.

It is important to understand that Merino is not a substitute for a thermal mid-layer in extreme cold, nor is it a waterproof or windproof layer. Its role is to regulate body temperature and manage moisture at the base layer level. When used as part of a considered layering system, it can significantly improve overall riding comfort.

For riders who spend long hours in the saddle, commute daily, or tour across varying conditions, Merino motorcycle base layers offer a simple but highly effective way to improve comfort in all seasons.

Norton: Excellent mid base layer

Great value top when worn with a thin base layer. The zip top makes getting in on easy and the thumb loops keep the sleeves in place plus they keep the wrists warm when wearing short gloves. so good I have two of them.
