Shoei Neotec 3 Grasp TC5 helmet in white / black / red Product Information

The new Shoei Neotec 3 is an updated and improved version of their already well reviewed Neotec 2. Shoei has always been at the forefront of developement in flip up / modular touring helmets and the Neotec 3 continues to be the market leader. As with all Shoei helmets the internal head liners and cheek pads can be changed to ensure a better fit. And now you can also benefit from the brand new Shoei Personal Fitting System (PFS).

It is now ECE 22-06 approved. In addition Shoei has worked hard to improve on the earlier model particularly in the areas of ventilation and quietness.

So the venting is improved on the new model. Both the brow and the chin vents are now two-position vents giving you more options than just open and closed.

The internal sun visor is deeper than the previous version so there is no possibility of seeing the bottom of the sun visor in your eyeline as there was previously.

The visor now has a central locking position and does require a two movement opening much as the new Shoei NXR 2 does. This is part of the new legislation but won't be liked by everyone and may need some practise with a thickly gloved hand.

The chin strap is thinner and softer to aid comfort (without compromising strength) and still comes with a ratchet system although the new one is a little less bulky than the old.

In terms of noise, the cheek pads have been extended at the back so there should be less chance for air ingress around the neck. In addition the integrated comms unit, the Sena SRL-03, has been made narrower and the switching at the side has been modified. These issues all to do with making less turbulence and therefore less noise.

The flip front closes more tightly and again this should reduce noise.

Comes with a 120 Pinlock as standard.

Joe: Good but not perfect

Im writing this review having purchased a Shoie Neotec 3 for the first time for a 3000 mile European trip. Its also partly based on a comparison with my Arai RX7 which is my default long-term helmet I have always used in the past. I purchased mainly for the flip-up aspect which Arai does not do. The helmet overall is very good but I was more disappointed than imagined having done extensive research before purchasing. The reasons being - 1.Poor ventilation at the front chinface area, compared to RX7 which has more vents. Maybe its limitations re flip-up design, but it wasnt good. 2.I was expecting the wind noise to be much less than my RX7, but it was not. It was at least the same if not maybe even slightly worse, so I was surprised. 3.The inner drop down sunshield mists on early sunny but still fresh mornings. Ironic because I have the pinlock on the main visor 4.I treated myself to the integrated Sena SRL3 intercom which I will write a separate review for, but I found the buttons on the helmet too small to safely operate, even with summer gloves. Its still a nice, quality helmet, but it is expensive, and left me a little disappointed.

It would seem to me that you perhaps didn't do enough research, because you have clearly not fully understood how flip-helmets, and in particular how flip  helmets like the Neotec, work.

Your Arai is basically a race-derived helmet, as indeed arguably all Arais are. And when you race you need excellent venting to keep your head and face cool under the extreme exertions such activity demands. So yes your Arai is well vented.

The Neotec is a different kettle of fish. Indeed, whilst there is venting on the chin, the helmet's venting is kept to a minimum, because air that comes into a helmet is basically noise. And the reason that the Shoei is deemed to be so quiet is that it is designed to keep out as much noise-inducing air as possible. Hence also the super-snug, neck curtain.

Now you say that you find your Arai to be as quiet as your Neotec, but that goes against the general tide of opinion. The Neotec 3 is considered by most observers to be the quietest helmet on the market. Whereas the general view is that Arais are noisy as heck. (Again because of the large amount of air they let in). And I say this as a long-term Arai wearer.

In terms of a misting drop-down, sun visor, there is no irony. Now the reason that a fogging sun visor is only to be expected is because, as I have explained, the Neotec is very well sealed.

Now good flip-helmets like the Shoei and the Schuberth always have a greater propensity to mist up in cold conditions than do normal helmets. That's why the Pinlock is so important. But there isn't one for the sun visor, so misting up cannot always be avoided. Of course the solution is to raise the main visor for a couple of seconds. The fogging will then disappear.

I won't address the comms. issue here, as you have covered that elsewhere. I do acknowledge that voice commands don't work well on the Sena; and indeed we do make this clear on the website. I have not heard of complaints about the size of the buttons. Maybe it's something you have to get used to.

Finally, you mention price. You say the Neotec is expensive, but it's nowhere near as expensive as the RX7 which, whilst very protective and beautifully built, offers nowhere near the features, functions and flexibility of the Neotec. In our view, if anything, it's the Arai that's noteworthy for its pricing; not the Shoei!
